Simple Bump Map Texture

I ran a simple test using the same basic image on three panels, and three different techniques to apply a texture:

  • Texture only
  • Texture with a Bump Map
  • Texture using Multiply node (something I saw in the 1st Cycles tutorial I watched and I wanted a comparison).

The results are pretty clear: the Bump Map technique works best.

Photoshop Bump Map

Creating a bump map image is easy. I used Photoshop CS2 because it's what I own. Feel free to use your favorite editor!

  1. Open the background/texture image in Photoshop
  2. Click Filter → Blur → Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 1 pixels.
  3. Click Image → Adjustments → Desaturate to make it black and white.
  4. Save your slightly blurred, grayscale image as a PNG
